BVNA launches Veterinary Nursing Awareness Month 2023

News Nurses
28 Apr 2023 BEVA

Every year during May, the veterinary profession celebrates Veterinary Nursing Awareness Month, proudly spearheaded by the British Veterinary Nursing Association (BVNA). This year’s theme is “empowerment” and aims to highlight the diverse range of skills and abilities of the veterinary nurse.

The purpose of VNAM is to raise awareness and understanding amongst the general public and pet owners, improving recognition of the vital role of the veterinary nurse – both in and out of clinical practice. We believe that vet nurses are superheroes and so are proud to support VNAM this year. BEVA President Dave Rendle said “RVNs are a significant asset to any equine practice. They are so patient, empathetic and caring (and) can take a lot of pressure off vets. We should be celebrating their role and empowering them to do more.”

Ahead of the month, BVNA President Charlotte Pace talked of her excitement surrounding the theme this year. She said “The beauty of veterinary nursing is its diversity, but our strength lies in our passion for animal welfare, and our community. By championing each other, we can show the world the importance of our profession in our own right.”

What’s on during VNAM 2023

Throughout May blogs, webinars and a host of other resources will explore the different stages of the veterinary nurse’s career from how to join the profession through to how nurses can feel empowered in their own workplace. The BVNA are also inviting individual SVNs and RVNs and their practices to take part in. The two competition categories are “What do your VNs mean to your practice?” and “What do you enjoy most about being a VN?” with entries in the form of short reel-style videos (up to 60 seconds). Entries are welcomed to particularly showcase the diverse careers and areas of practice which make up the veterinary nursing profession.
