SPVS recognized the challenges faced in providing Extra Mural Studies (EMS) during COVID and established a working group led by Andrew Parker to improve the EMS experience for students. A survey of 239 members revealed significant issues, particularly a mismatch of expectations between students and practices regarding the outcomes of placements. Many felt there was too much focus on practical skills rather than essential non-clinical skills.
The survey also indicated inconsistent participation from practices, often due to a lack of formal networks and fragmented university databases. Some practices wanted to offer more EMS opportunities but were not approached. Success in EMS placements was linked to clear expectations, strong relationships between students and practitioners, and the students' motivation.
SPVS EMS resources
To address these challenges, SPVS created the following resources that are available FREE for SPVS members to access:
• EMS pre-placement preparation form outlining practice requirements
• EMS induction form to help the student consider their priorities and expectations for the placement
• Skills Matrix provides a framework to structure learning objectives and record progress
• Included within the free resources are two useful videos explaining how they work

NEW EMS booking Database
Additionally, at this time, SPVS advised establishing a database for booking placements to streamline the process and address the challenges identified in the survey. RCVS has now launched their EMS booking database, allowing practices to register, showcase their offerings, and manage placement requests. Students can search for practices that meet their desired experiences, facilitating better alignment of expectations on both sides. This database serves as a comprehensive solution to the challenges highlighted in the EMS survey.
SPVS and RCVS are now calling on veterinary practices and workplaces to sign up to the database. To find out more about becoming an EMS provider or to sign up for the database, practices should email the Education Team at the RCVS on ems@rcvs.org.uk.
More details on the benefits of EMS and examples of various placement opportunities, can be found on the dedicated EMS section of the RCVS website.
Andrew Parker the EMS Group Lead and SPVS Past President highlights the potential benefits of the newly introduced RCVS EMS booking database.
“The system is designed to streamline the process of arranging Extra Mural Studies EMS placements for Veterinary Students and Veterinary Practices, fostering a more efficient and positive experience. The database aligns with SPVS’ goal of cultivating resilience in Veterinary Graduates by enhancing their practical learning opportunities, which can contribute to their long term enjoyment and success in clinical practice.”
Pete Orpin, Chair of SPVS Board and Linda Prescott-Clements, RCVS Director of Education have worked on a short video talking through some of the key points about the new database:
- The database is free for both providers and students to use
- Providers are in control of booking placement slots to fit with their practice schedule
- Providers should input as much information as possible about what they can offer, to ensure the best matches are found, meaning best possible placement outcomes for practice and student
- The database will be open to students all over the UK early 2025
