Secretariat Leaya Slater gives us an update on the latest news from the BEVA Trust...
We’re currently busy preparing to re-launch overseas projects in Autumn 2022 with a variety of partners whilst continuing to support the British Horse Society (BHS) with the Education and Welfare Clinics in the UK. The BEVA Trust is extremely grateful to members for taking the time to support previous UK, overseas and virtual projects and delighted that members continue to support the work of the Trust.
The BEVA Trust and BHS have worked together for the past seven years. Over 250 veterinary volunteers have so far helped a total of 1631 horses by offering their time and expertise at special clinics around the country. Coordinated by the BHS, and with practical support from a number of other equine welfare charities, these clinics provide dental care, castration, farriery, worming, microchipping and passporting for horses identified to be in need. A total of 753 horses have now been castrated.
Four Education and Welfare Clinics took place during the Spring; in York on 9 March, at Stoneleigh Park on 24 March, a third clinic on 28 April in Holmfirth and finally the fourth clinic was held on 4th May in Chelmsford. All four clinics were extremely well attended, the veterinary teams were kept very busy, working together to provide microchipping and passports, dental checks and castrations (where needed) to over 200 horses.
Every Clinic was a team effort with 10-13 BEVA members attending each clinic. These clinics allow less experienced vets the opportunity to gain experience and others enjoyed sharing their knowledge and supporting others. The vets were supported at every clinic by one or two vet nurses whose role was crucial in helping the day to run smoothly. We were delighted to see many familiar faces as well as first timers at the Spring Clinics. Volunteers travelled from across the country and even flying into the UK to attend.
Plans are underway for the Autumn Clinics. To be the first to hear when dates are released get in touch at leaya@beva.org.uk to add your name to the mailing list.
