Can airborne viruses survive in water?

A new study challenges the tenet that herpes viruses, like most enveloped viruses, are relatively unstable outside their host. Under a variety of conditions equine herpesvirus remained stable and infectious over a three week period. This suggests that untreated water could be a source of infection by some herpesviruses. The results are reported in the scientific journal “Scientific Reports”.

Central funding of British racing moves into new era as replacement Levy comes into force on 25 April 2017

British racing welcomes European Commission’s endorsement of new Levy scheme

European Commission today announced its endorsement of the new Horserace Betting Levy which will capture all betting on the sport
Proposed rate of 10% on Gross Gambling Yield (GGY) (subject to a de minimis threshold of £500,000) also confirmed
Levy receipts will be targeted at growing the grassroots of British racing and will also support integrity, equine welfare, veterinary science and the mental and physical wellbeing of the sport’s participants.

Amendments to the BHA Rules of Racing – Cobalt and Medication Records

In April 2016, the BHA implanted a raceday cobalt threshold in urine of 100ng/ml total cobalt.
Whilst cobalt is an essential trace element and is naturally present in the horse, it may also have the potential to enhance performance when present at concentrations that exceed normal physiological parameters. However, it is also possible that exposure to significantly increased
levels of cobalt may have welfare implications for the horse.

New Working Party set up to consider legislative changes

The Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS) has set up a Working Party to consider whether new legislation to regulate the profession may be appropriate.

An Update on the Levy Replacement

British racing has this evening taken a significant step towards securing the Levy replacement, following a vote in favour of the Horserace Betting Levy Regulations in the House of Lords, which has completed the Parliamentary process. This Statutory Instrument will enact the extension of the Levy to offshore betting operators that will ensure a fair, enforceable and sustainable return from all betting activity on our sport.
