Welfare Study Calls for New Noseband Rules

The Guardian's Nicola Davis has reported on research from Australia which indicates that horses’ heart rates were raised and they struggled to chew when nosebands were fitted too tightly around the animals’ heads.

Lords Call for Racing to Continue Veterinary Funding Through an Independent Body

Last night (20th April 2016) the House of Lords asked the Government what progress had been made towards the introduction of the Horserace Betting Right. The current Levy system, which was introduced in 1961, will be replaced in April 2017 by the new scheme. Horserace Betting Right aims to close a loophole which has allowed some betting operators to avoid making any contribution to horseracing by increasing their presence offshore. The Horserace Betting Levy Board (HBLB) currently funds veterinary research and advancement. At the House of Lords last night Lord Trees spoke on the importance to racing of veterinary research and concluded with two calls:

New Fellowship scheme launched and accepting applications

The Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS) has launched its new Fellowship scheme and is now accepting applications from veterinary surgeons who have made a meritorious contribution to their particular field.

BEVA Trust vet volunteers reach 100th castration for healthcare project

BEVA Trust veterinary volunteers have now performed their 100th equine castration and healthcare check for horses deemed to be ‘at risk’. They volunteered their time and expertise for a series of charitable equine healthcare and castration clinics organised by the BHS, the latest of which was held in Northampton last week.

New research projects and scholarships starting in 2016

The HBLB’s Veterinary Advisory Committee (VAC) will again be managing new veterinary scientific research investment on behalf of the Racing Foundation, the Thoroughbred Breeders’ Association (TBA) and the British European Breeders Fund (BEBF).  In addition to the funding allocation approved by HBLB of £1.55m (2015: £1.8m), £133,500 has been made available by the Foundation, while the TBA and BEBF have chosen to support two of the new Post Doctoral Fellowships with £352,000 and £60,000 respectively over three years.   In addition, both the TBA and ROA contribute towards the Equine Infectious Disease Service.

Former BEVA President Tim Greet Retires From Rossdales

On 31st March 2016, Tim Greet retired as Managing Partner of Rossdales, as 1st April marked the start of a new chapter at the practice with the appointment of three new associate partners, Lewis Smith, Emily Haggett and Tom O’Keeffe. 

Deadline approaching for vets’ annual renewal fees

The Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS) is reminding veterinary surgeons that they need to complete their annual renewal for 2016-7 by the end of April. About 75% of veterinary surgeons have renewed their registrations so far.

Amendments to the Rules of Racing – Cobalt and Shoes

The British Horseracing Authority (BHA) has announced the details of two amendments to the Rules of Racing which come into effect from 2 April 2016.
