The Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS) has decided to extend its Ethics Review Panel for a further year with an expanded remit to consider a greater diversity of applications.

65 People Arrested for Organised Crime in Regards to Horse Meat

The Spanish Guardia Civil, in coordination with Europol, has dismantled an organised crime group that was trading horsemeat in Europe that was unfit for human consumption. The operation was carried out in coordination with Belgium, France, Italy, Portugal, Romania, Switzerland and the United Kingdom. In Spain, 65 people were arrested and charged with crimes such as animal abuse, document forgery, perverting the course of justice, crimes against public health, money laundering and being part of a criminal organisation.

College warns profession not to employ bogus vet

The Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS) has issued a warning to veterinary practices not to employ a bogus vet who steals the identity of legitimately registered members in order to practise fraudulently.

Equine Infectious Anaemia Reported in Northern Europe

It has been reported in both Germany and the Netherlands that there have been recent outbreaks of Equine Infectious Anaemia, all related to the import of Argentinian Polo ponies – possibly in the same single consignment. The latest update states:

NEW STAND-DOWN PERIOD: BISPHOSPHONATES

The British Horseracing Authority (BHA) would like to advise the Responsible Person (i.e. trainers, owners, breeders) and their veterinary surgeons of a new Rule requiring a mandatory 30 day Stand-Down period from racing following the administration of any bisphosphonate licensed for equine use. This Rule will be effective from 10 August 2017.

BEVA ‘proud’ of horse vets for safeguarding equine welfare

BEVA has defended the work equine vets do to safeguard horse welfare, stating “profit must not be confused with a lack of passion”.

The call came after a session titled “Are vets failing our horses?” took place at the BVA Animal Welfare Foundation Discussion Forum in London.
