Professions overwhelmingly support expanded role for veterinary nurses

Both veterinary nurses and veterinary surgeons overwhelmingly support that veterinary nurses should be able to undertake additional areas of work that are not currently permitted under Schedule 3 of the Veterinary Surgeons Act 1966.

Horse Health Survey trends reflect current equine research

Results from the 2017 National Equine Health Survey (NEHS), conducted by Blue Cross in conjunction with the British Equine Veterinary Association (BEVA), show that more than a third of horses surveyed this year had one or more health problems. While the top disease trends of lameness and skin disease remain consistent with previous years, one of the most significant findings is that the results reflect current equine veterinary research; a quarter (26%) of horses with back problems were also showing signs of lameness, which ties in with recent studies conducted at the Animal Health Trust.

EIA Confirmed in Spain and Macedonia

The OIE have confirmed Equine Infectious Anaemia in both Spain (2 animals) and FYR Macedonia (3 clinical cases reported with one dying and 5 others destroyed among a total of 10). There are no details confirming the breed/type/use of animals and whether there are clear links to other recent cases in other European countries. BEVA will update its Members when further information is available.
