UK Equine influenza outbreaks reported in 2019

Please find attached an update from the Animal Health Trust on the latest UK equine influenza (EI) situation, which took a further development in recent days.

Update from the Thoroughbred Industries Brexit Steering Group

The British Racing and Breeding industries, represented by the Thoroughbred Industries Brexit Steering Group, hope that a Withdrawal Agreement between the United Kingdom and European Union can be reached in the coming weeks. Any implementation period following a withdrawal agreement would, for example, see a continuation of the current free movement of thoroughbreds between Britain, Ireland and France until at least December 2020 with work proceeding on longer-term arrangements beyond any such period. However, we are making no assumptions and therefore ruling out no scenarios.

BHA notice - Updated detection time - Omeprazole

The British Horseracing Authority (BHA) would like to advise the Responsible Person (i.e. trainers, owners, breeders) and their veterinary surgeons that the Detection Time for omeprazole has been reduced from 72 hours to 48 hours. The updated Detection Time will be effective from 01 February 2019.

Experts to enlighten on fitness and behaviour National Equine Forum

The latest knowledge and know how on horse and rider fitness and equine stereotypical behaviours will be shared by scientific, veterinary and educational experts at the forthcoming National Equine Forum, to be held in London on 7th March 2019. 

EQUINE INFLUENZA ALERT 2

Following the Equine Influenza Alert on 18 January 2019, the BHA has discussed the recent outbreaks in Europe with the Animal Health Trust, and veterinary advisors from stakeholder groups including the National Trainers Federation and the Racehorse Owners Association. 

RCVS Council opens the path for paraprofessionals to become regulated by the College

The Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS) Council has approved a pathway for veterinary and animal health paraprofessionals to become associates of or accredited by the College and therefore fall within the RCVS regulatory remit.

Introduction of hind shoes rule for Jump racing delayed to consider further evidence

Following the receipt of further submissions from the National Trainers Federation (NTF) and individual trainers, the British Horseracing Authority (BHA) has taken the decision to delay the implementation of an approved rule which requires all Jump horses to race fully shod, which was due to be introduced from 1 February.
