RCVS Council agrees wide-ranging review of guidance on ‘under care’ and 24/7 cover

The Council of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS) last week gave the go-ahead for a wide-ranging review of a number of key provisions of the supporting guidance to the RCVS Code of Professional Conduct, following ongoing discussions around trialling the development of telemedicine services, including remote prescribing, in UK veterinary practice.

In the (bike) saddle - balancing work and sport

Last weekend, three UK based equine vets represented Great Britain at the European Triathlon Union standard distance championships in the Netherlands. Vets Lucy Collins, Hani Milstein and Sam Morley swam 1500m, biked 40 km and ran 10km to cross the finish line. Sam reflects on the competition and his experience balancing sport and work.

Reiteration of Semen Certification Rules

As announced in the last BEVA eNews, Defra and the APHA have agreed to accept fresh semen imported from the EU if it is accompanied by a copy of the signed, stamped and correctly dated Intra Trade Animal Health Certificate (ITAHC).  This flexibility has been introduced because of the challenges faced by some regions in ensuring that original documents accompany imported fresh semen.

RCVS plans roll-out of outcomes-based CPD model

The Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS) is planning to roll out a new outcomes-based model of continuing professional development (CPD) over the next few years, following a successful piloting process.

Infectious Equine Disease - Atypical Myopathy

On 1 May 2019, the University of Liege reported 73 cases of Atypical Myopathy in Belgium, France, Czech Republic, Netherlands and UK since 1 April 2019. 

The toxin responsible for atypical myopathy is also contained in sycamore seedlings (Acer pseudoplatanus). Currently, there are large number of sycamore seedlings, therefore, it is imperative to avoid equines (horses, donkeys, zebras) ingesting them. It is important to check your grass to make sure it does not contain these seedlings.
