About this course

Our Fundamentals of the Skin, Eyes, & Difficult Moments combines online learning and a practical day to boost your clinical skills and confidence in general equine practice.

Before attending the practical day, you will have access to online lectures and quizzes. Your lectures will cover examining the eye, examining the skin, the use of the cascade and medicines as well as time management.

On your practical day you will have the opportunity to get hands on practicing techniques required to examine, diagnose, and treat common ophthalmic and dermatologic conditions. In small group rotations you will:

  • Practice obtaining samples, including coat brushing, hair sampling, swabs, and sticky tape impressions.
  • Discuss how to decide when skin scrapes, fine-needle aspiration (FNA), and biopsies are useful and how to take, store and post them.
  • Practice using and focusing your ophthalmoscope and develop your understanding of what you are looking at in the eye.
  • Using cadaver specimens, practice swabbing, blocking and ultrasonography of the eye.
  • Discuss common difficult situations you have encountered or may encounter including dealing with difficult clients, how to manage time and what to do when things go wrong and gain invaluable advice on how to manage these situations.
