Volunteering FAQs
Whether you're thinking about joining us for a BEVA Trust project or you're already signed up, we've compiled frequently asked questions that volunteers have. Can't find what you're looking for? Please do not hesitate to get in touch with us.
What does the BEVA Trust do?

We provide opportunities, support, and funding to allow vets and vet nurses to volunteer for projects that seek to enhance equine welfare both locally and globally, in partnership with other organisations.

Who can volunteer?

BEVA members who are qualified vets and nurses are welcome to apply for opportunities. Some projects require specific experience (for example teaching or reproduction experience) or a particular skill (for example speak a language).

Do I have to be a member of BEVA to apply?

Yes, but you can join retrospectively to fulfil this.

Are there any other requirements to volunteer overseas?

A need to be open to other cultures and environments and be prepared to only have access to limited resources. By their nature some projects are in regions with poor resources and challenging welfare circumstances.

Where can I find out about what to expect when I attend a project?

We are building a useful resource that showcases previous volunteers experience as well as some supporting clinical materials to help volunteers prepare for overseas projects.

Who does BEVA Trust work with?

The BEVA Trust partners are usually universities or welfare charities and include GHDT, MAWO, BHS, WHW, ACE Egypt, American Fondouk and the Estonian University of Life Sciences.

What opportunities are available and where can I find them?

A variety of clinical and educational projects in the UK and overseas (often based in low to middle income countries). You can join the mailing list to be notified of upcoming opportunities, or visit our webpage.

Do I need to fund and organise my travel for overseas projects?

The BEVA Trust alongside the partner organisation will organise and fund flights, accommodation, meals and in country transfers and transport.

What are the obligations of volunteers?

To promote the work of the Trust and our partner organisations whenever possible (eg through social media etc) and to provide the Trust with personal feedback of your volunteer experience for the benefit of the Trust and other volunteers.

When and where do the BHS/BEVA Trust education and welfare clinic take place?

Up to eight education and welfare clinics take place in Spring and Autumn in partnership with the BHS at different locations around the UK.

Can I apply for more than one opportunity at a time?

Yes, of course.

How likely am I to be selected?

As there are a good number of UK projects each year you should have a good chance of being selected although some locations are more oversubscribed than others. There are fewer opportunities with the overseas projects and these are often popular however if you are keen we strongly urge you to apply as we try to offer the opportunities to as many BEVA members as we can.

What insurance do I need to volunteer?

For overseas projects you will need to arrange your own travel insurance and it is essential that you do this. Although some of the overseas projects are in exotic locations, we try to make sure that they are safe for volunteers. We do not accept projects in territories where the UK Government advises against travel. For education and welfare clinics if you have consent from your employer to attend then the employer’s professional indemnity insurance should cover you for any work carried out at the clinic. The VDS have confirmed that this is the case for their equine/mixed policies.

Will volunteering count towards my annual CPD requirements?

Yes. Experience from previous volunteers has demonstrated that these opportunities provide very valuable CPD.

Can I propose a project for the BEVA Trust?

Yes. We are always looking for new projects. Projects should be safe, meet an existing need for veterinary support to welfare organisations, deliver a meaningfully positive impact to horse welfare, either directly or indirectly and be practical financially. Overseas projects will need to have the support of a respected local partner organistation.

How else can I support BEVA Trust besides volunteering?

Raising funds! Although all volunteers generously provide their time for free (pro bono) there are costs involved in running the Trust and covering travel and overseas accommodation costs, any fundraising efforts towards this are extremely welcome no matter how small or how large! For example, practices have made donations from client talks via a very modest ticket charge.
