About this course

Chronic pain has huge welfare and economical impacts and is rapidly advancing as an important specialism in the fields of human and small animal medicine. This course is the first to offer a comprehensive, evidence based, practical toolkit specifically addressing chronic pain in horses. Upskilling clinical team members in chronic pain assessment and management will allow practices to advance the levels of care and range of services available to clients.

The course will be delivered by experts in equine behaviour, welfare, legislation and physiology. This course will provide a unique insight into the complexities of assessing and managing chronic pain in horses.

This course will combine lectures, workshops and discussions with practical sessions to address the following learning objectives:

To understand the physiological and behavioural manifestations of chronic pain in the horse:
Drawing on the ever-evolving literature surrounding pain in multiple species to deepen understanding of the pathophysiology of chronic pain and how it manifests in the equine patient. We will explore the red flags that should alert a clinician that chronic pain may be an issue and how to logically approach these cases for the best outcomes.

To understand the ethical and welfare implications of chronic pain in the horse:
We will develop a deeper understanding of the impact that chronic pain has on the welfare of the horse and frameworks available to assess quality of life in patients. An understanding of using quality of life assessments to make informed decisions about treatment and end of life care, including how to communicate this with owners.

To develop skills for the evaluation, management and monitoring of chronic pain in the horse:
Drawing on current literature to evaluate the range of tools available for identifying and assessing chronic pain in horses and how to apply them in a practical setting.

The course is designed to provide delegates with a logical approach to the chronic pain case using the underpinning theory and evidence. Delegates will be taken through history taking, clinical assessment and quality of life informed decision making generating a practical toolkit for chronic pain cases.
