Fyrnwy Equine Clinic has an exciting opportunity for an Equine Intern to join their team. This is a full-time temporary position, with a start date of January 2024.
Your working month would look as follows -
 

Week 1:
Clinic -
Providing inpatient care
Assisting with surgery
Performing general anaesthesia
Lameness work ups
Diagnostic imaging including MRI, ultrasonography, digital wireless radiography, endoscopy, gastroscopy etc
Lab diagnostics and interpretation
Shared clinic on call
 

Week 2:
Ambulatory -
Caring for patients out on the road
Routine visits including vaccinations, dentals, passporting etc
During the season attending stud and assisting the stud vets
Attending emergencies, colics, wounds, acute onset lameness etc
Responsibility for own cases seen on the road encouraged
Continuity of cases seen when referring into clinic
 

Week 3:
Clinic - as above, shared clinic on call.
 

Week 4:
Ambulatory -
On call
Covering out of hours 5pm-8am for the road (off during the day)
Dedicated and experienced second on-call vet to support and advise on calls

The referral caseload will be overseen by European and American Specialists in Equine Medicine and Equine Surgery, offering a full spectrum of routine and emergency services.
We also offer fortnightly journal clubs and monthly textbook rounds, a programme of practical tutorials throughout the internship, accommodation, vehicle and phone.

About Us
Fyrnwy Equine Clinic is a specialist veterinary practice, dedicated to the horse world. We offer both a highly experienced ambulatory equine practice and an expert, fully equipped equine surgical facility. We are also BEVA approved for internships.

Our facilities include:
Stabling
CCTV on site, in all stables and recovery box
Isolation box
Padded box for stabling of colic patients
Loading ramp
Large and small grass paddocks for the turnout of convalescing patients
Diagnostics
Trot up area with 20x30m arena and hard lunge surface for poor performance and lameness investigations
In-house laboratory facilities, allowing same-day results and daily assessments of inpatients
In-house and fully portable digital X-ray systems, including wireless DR machine
Video and fibre-optic endoscopes for clinic-based and stall-side investigation of airways and genito-urinary tracts
Gastroscope for investigating stomach ulcers
Dynamic endoscopy - for imaging the upper airways of horses during exercise
Ultrasound machines, enabling us to get high-quality for Reproduction, Cardiology, Lameness and Chest and abdominal scanning
Equine operating theatre with padded anaesthetic induction and recovery room
Arthroscope - for keyhole surgery for investigation and treatment of joint problems
Reproduction suite for Embryo transfer and frozen and chilled A.I
Since January 2003 Fyrnwy Equine Clinics has been based at a purpose-built site at Baschurch, Shrewsbury which is situated close to the Welsh hills with beautiful tourist spots within a short distance.
Spread over 2 sites, we are a team of 19 vets, including a European Specialist and American Diplomate, 2 CertAVPs, 3 EVNs, 2 SVNs, 2 yard technicians, 9 clinic and admin staff.
We also take part in a few charity events and have some challenges already set for this year!

Applicant Requirements
You must be MRCVS qualified or due to qualify before the internship begins. We are looking for 100% equine-specific interest and relevant EMS experience.
